What about salt water sanitation?

People usually ask about salt systems for one of two reasons. The first is that they think they are getting salt water, like the ocean. That is not the case.   The second reason is because they think salt systems are an alternative to chlorine. Once again, that is not true.

The problem with salt systems is that they work by ionizing salt into Sodium and Chlorine. In other words, you add salt instead of chlorine, but the “salt cell” converts the salt into sodium and chlorine. The chlorine does the disinfection. Unfortunately, the sodium is very corrosive and has the unintended consequence of corroding metallic surfaces, such as motors and heaters.
